A few days ago, I checked the Angels’ trade options at third base. One name I didn’t come up with was Garret Atkins. For once, because I didn’t know he was available, but more importantly, because his .677 OPS this year was not a great eye catcher. But according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, he’s on the Angels’ wish list. Rosenthal suggests the Angels could part with Brandon Wood to get him. That strikes me as pretty far-fetched. Firstly, the Rockies already have prospect Ian Stewart at third base in AAA (something Rosenthal mentions himself). Secondly, the Rockies need pitching and the Angels have it. Thirdly, Atkins, who so far has only two full seasons on his resume, is far from a sure thing. His 2006 season was spectacular (.965 OPS, 29 HR), but it his bad start this year and his .340 BABIP in 2006 suggest he might have been playing a bit over his head.
All in all, I think Atkins is still a very enticing option, but I would not deal Wood for him. If he starts turning things around and has a strong June however, I would be willing to give up an arms and something for him.
